Life, at times, is difficult, and at times we can find ourselves, feeling alone, and therefore vulnerable.

Who do we turn to in times of distress? Family? Friends?

Locked into our distress we may consider it too much trouble to “burden” others with our problems, “after all they have their own life’s, and I don’t want to be any bother”. Sometimes our family and friends are too close to the cause of our distress to provide an objective alternative. Sometimes they’ve just run out of patience.

The bottle? What harm can one drink do? Besides, a drink may have proven itself to have been an effective solution, in the past.

A pill? All too often it seems, medication is prescribed with the intention of it being a short-term intervention, only the short term intervention gets extended, and dependency develops. Sometimes, we attribute more ‘power’ to the medication than it is worth, and in so doing lose sight of our own ability to effect healthy change.

Seemingly intrinsic vulnerabilities to anxiety, depression and stress may act as a precursor to using alcohol and drugs (prescribed or otherwise) as coping strategies.
